There are 5 Books in the Bible that are called the Wisdom books. They are Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon. In the book of Proverbs, wise and wisdom are used 125 times. The the aim of this book is to help us acquire God’s wisdom and apply it to our daily lives.
Wisdom was an important commodity in the ancient Near East. Most of the kings had wisemen in their kingdom where the king consulted them while making important decisions. We see the examples of Joseph, Daniel, and his friends who are treated as wisemen and the kings consulted them for solving issues and also for making important decisions.
There is a difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is acquiring information, but wisdom is the ability to use knowledge. Wisdom is more than a good advice. Dr. Roy Zuck says, “Wisdom is being skillful and successful in one’s relationships and responsibilities.”
The Bible says, “fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Biblical wisdom starts with establishing a relationship with the Lord. Book of Proverbs talks about several things, like marriage, sex, alcohol, laziness, character, family, debt, work, friendship, forgiveness, etc.
The book opens with the words of a father instructing his son to listen to the lady wisdom and closes with the words of a mother to his son about a woman who lives wisely.
